How much fill dirt do you need?
- Measure the average depth: take several readings and average them.
- Compact fill in 4–6 inch layers for anything that will carry weight.
- Top the fill with 4–6 inches of topsoil if you want grass to grow.
- A standard dump truck carries about 10–14 cubic yards.

What is the difference between fill dirt and topsoil?
Fill dirt is subsoil with little organic matter — good for raising grade because it compacts and doesn’t rot. Topsoil is the richer top layer that plants grow in.
How much does a yard of fill dirt weigh?
Roughly 2,000 lb (about 1 ton) when loose and dry, and noticeably more when wet or compacted.
Is it cheaper to buy bags or bulk?
For anything over about 1 cubic yard, bulk delivery is usually cheaper per cubic yard than bags, though you pay a delivery fee. Bags make sense for small jobs, top-ups and places a truck can’t reach.
